about

All proceeds from purchases on my bandcamp (including Lion Heart) are being donated to a Chicago, IL organization called My Block, My Hood, My City. They have been hitting the ground hard raising money for businesses to reopen and rebuild, giving micro grants to those who want to organize in their community, and delivering PPE kits (hand sanitizer, health supplements, toiletries, and food) to seniors and those with disability who would otherwise lack access to. Feel free to follow them on instagram @myblockmyhoodmycity. For more info or to donate directly, visit www.formyblock.org

Pendent: : remaining undetermined : PENDING.

Years went by for Mercury and the feeling of pending never ceased. This music is about a time where this feeling of uncertainty flooded his life (around the time that followed the experiences of tragedy in Lion Heart, becoming a search for self). Pendent's about the things and people that kept him going, the things that made him exacerbated with frustration, and the vices that tested his will to cope.

The debut of Mr. Mercury on 2018’s Lion Heart, a quietly self-released EP made up of punchy beats and ethereal instrumentals revealed Lefrançois’s interest in sound as a tool to explore trauma and vulnerability. Two years later, Mr. Mercury delivers his first full-length mixtape, Pendent. The tape, an amalgam of pop and electronic tracks, sees Lefrançois journeying through the same themes, with an added instrument: his voice.

Pendent opens with the bright and minimal “Metronorth,” a track that joyfully builds, culminating with Mercury’s effected falsetto reciting “Leave me be I wanna be alone. Don’t follow me I’ll make it on my own” - an early wish for solitude and autonomy. In contrast, “Lint in the Valley” assumes a cooler, aggressive tone reflecting the dark thoughts of interrogating one’s perception of the world and sense of self. The swirling melody of “Girls” creates an infectiously upbeat ambiance with Mercury’s soaring yet nonchalant hook “I don’t care about you,” quickly contrasted by the robotripped love ballad “Her (Woman).” Following the emotional release of “Water Through Skin Holes,” the record shifts from cerebral to celebratory with the subtly exuberant “Shock Absorber” and “Hydrangea Buds.” Concluding with an abstracted cover of “Golden Slumbers,” the record concludes with voice messages from loved ones, a reminder of the wonderfully innocent poetry of everyday life.
